Why Isn’t My SEO Working?

Troubleshooting your SEO practices can be complicated, especially when you aren’t seeing the results you want.

SEO is not exactly something that should be left to the amateur these days. Back in the old days, any amateur would be able to get high page ranks just by cramming pages with keywords and occasionally submitting their site to major directories. Nowadays, Google’s algorithms are much more sophisticated, and a single wrong move can undo all your efforts. If you have been trying to work your page through SEO practices, you may be seeing problems with your traffic. Here are some of the most common reasons why.

  • You’re expecting instant results. Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor was an online reputation and top tier rankings. Give it time. It’s common for changes to take up to three months to show results.
  • You made the mistake of using blackhat tactics. This could have been buying gross traffic, keyword stuffing, or even farming out backlinks to shady directories. Whatever it was, if you used unethical or sketchy means of getting traffic, you most likely ended up getting penalized by Google – if not outright banned from search engines altogether.
  • You didn’t use good keyword strings. Keywords are important when it comes to the quality of SEO. This is why you need the help of a professional – keyword research is difficult, and often quite intuitive.
  • You really had no idea what to do, and just tried random ideas. A good portion of SEO is all about consistency and knowing the basic rules of how search engine crawlers work. If you don’t know how to use H1 tags, don’t know what kind of links to cultivate, and don’t know how many times a keyword should be mentioned, then you are probably not going to see much in terms of results for a very, very long time or possibly never.
  • The keywords that you are targeting are so broad and general, it’s borderline impossible to actually get good rankings. Instead of targeting something as broad as “diet plans” or “weight loss,” choose keyword strings that are more custom-tailored to your site’s purpose, such as “vegan diet plans” or “weight loss for juvenile diabetes.” The more niche the keyword, the less likely it is that you will be lost in a massive sea of websites.
  • There’s no connection to any other site or social media platform. Backlinks matter – no matter how much we wish they wouldn’t. You need to have an active social media presence, an active following, as well as a tendency to cultivate natural links with blogs, major school sites, and company sites. Otherwise, your SEO work will be for naught.

The bottom line is that SEO does take time, but it will take less time if it’s done by the qualified and talented hands of a professional who understands search algorithms. If you’ve tried to do SEO work by yourself, chances are that you have probably hurt your site’s ranking more than helped it in at least one way. Don’t wait until your site becomes blacklisted or forgotten.
