Likewise, marketing is also an important concentration in the business world. With technology and marketing, this combination has helped businesses tremendously. There are many different mediums that businesses can use for marketing, from traditional mediums to online mediums. This blog post will briefly go over traditional mediums and how technology has shaped online mediums.

Traditional Marketing Mediums

There is a list of mediums that marketers have taken advantage of for many decades. Since the early 1900s, marketers have utilized and evolved with these traditional mediums. These mediums are as follows:

  1. Television
  2. Radio
  3. Print
  4. Direct mail
  5. Telephone

Television is still a well-used medium today in 2019, contrary to popular belief. There are still a lot of people who do still watch regular television daily. It is not very common to see a small business on a television commercial, but it does happen from time-to-time. Television is an influential traditional medium. People assume the business that is advertising is serious about promoting their products and services because tv-spots are expensive. A tv spot can be anywhere from $200-$150,000. Fun fact: Super-Bowl tv-spots can be up to $4 million dollars!

The radio marketing medium may not seem as common as it was ten years ago, but it is still around. There are many people who still listen to the radio! Most people nowadays are taking up music streaming for their music sources. If an individual is listening to streaming services for free, there will be advertisements for them to listen to.

The print medium is still a common and effective marketing medium. We still see it daily everywhere we look. The print medium is very broad. Therefore, we see them on handouts, flyers, billboards, books, magazines, newspapers, and more.

Direct Mail

Direct mail is similar to the print medium. However,  it is given to a business’ target audience differently.  For example, instead of promoting a product or service to the public using a billboard, it is directly handed to an individual in private as a flyer, or more. A business will determine who to send their mail to based on their target audience’s demographics.

The telephone marketing medium is known to be effective, but unfortunately, most people do not want to listen to a telemarketer. Though it may not seem as common as it was ten years ago, telephone marketing is still useful for businesses to help promote their products and services.

Online Marketing Mediums

With technology, it is much easier to market through the internet. Technology has helped shape the online marketing mediums being used today.  There are five online marketing mediums:

  1. Email
  2. Pay-per-click
  3. Search engine optimization
  4. Social media
  5. Mobile marketing

Email is very effective and is known to be an influential marketing medium. Instead of direct mail, you can receive an email quicker and businesses can promote their products and services easier. Most of these emails provide a link to a company’s website. Therefore, this creates new opportunities to gain new clients and increase sales.

Pay-per-click is a very fast way to promote a business through search engines. This allows a business to advertise by paying money to a search engine and use keywords to best describe their business. As a result, that business will be placed first on a search result with the keyword used to describe their business. Pay-per-click allows a business to gain more web traffic and new clients.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is a very important medium to gain more business. Through the search engines Google, Bing, and Yahoo, it is important to appear on a search engine to gain new website traffic and new clients. Search engine optimization is similar to pay-per-click. However, a business does not have to pay money for an advertisement to be shown on a search engine result. A business can gain traffic to their website organically.

Social Media

Social media is a growing trend, not just for individuals, but for businesses as well. Businesses have taken advantage of social media to interact with their clients. Therefore, this a helps them to create a relationship, which is crucial for marketing. Social media is also important for all businesses to have as it helps to promote their product and services.

Mobile Marketing

Mobile marketing is a very broad term. There are a lot of attributes to mobile marketing. It is becoming a more dominant form of marketing today in 2019. Why is this? The answer is because more and more people are relying on their phones and tablets for internet use. Individuals are using their mobile devices more than their desktops or laptops to find any information that they need. Businesses have taken advantage of mobile marketing by placing an advertisement that is specifically made to be viewed on mobile devices.
