4 Tips For On-Page SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be broken down into several sections. Backlinking, meta descriptions, focusing key phrasing, and so much more. What are some ways to improve page optimization in the eyes of Google? Here are four SEO tips to help improve a page’s optimization.

Keywords Need to be Well Placed

There is a correlation between how a site is ranked, and the placement of exact-match keywords. When keywords are included in the title of a page it lets an individual know that the page has relevancy. However, it is important to note that the placement of your keywords should not be forced. The page does not have to contain the key phrase in every sentence. It does not even have to appear in every other sentence. In fact, you are not even required to use the same word over and over. Google’s top ranking results generally contain hundreds of other keywords within the same page. So make use of those synonyms as well!

Meta Descriptions Should be Compelling, But Not Complicated

A meta description is a summary of a page’s content. This summary is a brief statement containing the main points of something. According to Yoast, an SEO program, meta descriptions should have these characteristics:

  • It should be written in the active voice. Consider the meta description as the “invitation to the page”
  • It should contain the main keyword of the page. Google will be more likely to highlight the meta description in its results.
  • It should be unique and match the content of the page it is attached to. Google will even penalize websites that mislead the searcher by using misleading meta descriptions. Falsifying a meta description will also increase the bounce rate, which will lead Google to decrease a page’s ranking.

Image ALT Tags Should be Descriptive

What is an alt tag? An alt tag describes the image as well as its function on a given page. Alt tags are most useful for screen readers; browsers used by the blind and visually impaired to navigate the internet.

Alt tags also become useful in the event a page fails to load. Instead of the image, the page visitor will instead see the tag identifying the image. Alt tags should describe their image as accurately as possible. A great idea would be to include the main keyword of the page in the tag, however much like on the page itself and in the meta description, it should not be forced into the tag.

Linking is Best Done with Anchor Text

Links are very important to Google and to SEO. The engine uses links to find relevant content on a website and its value. Google crawls sites by following these links. It starts at the homepage, renders it, and then follows the first link on the page. Anchoring a link to text is a great technique to include links in a page. The anchor text should occur naturally on the page, again, not forced. Using keywords as anchor text is optional. Just remember that every link should not be anchored with the same keyword.

Good SEO can make or break a site’s ranking in Google as well as on other search engines. Having good search engine optimization means that searchers will be more inclined to click on your page and give it more attention. SEO can be hard to learn and even more difficult to master.
